Originally today's was going to be about Halloween candy and having your kids trade in candy for money or a toy. 4 pieces of candy = a $0.25 or a small toy, but then I stumbled across this video and thought I'd share it. As I fully agree with the 3 things you need to succeed in weight loss and making a healthy lifestyle change.
Keep Smiling,
Michelle.

Burpees and Halloween Candy
Did you know the average American consumes 3.4 LBS of candy during the Halloween season!!! I"m not saying don't eat candy, as I know I"ll be having someone this weekend, what am saying though is...
1. Be mindful of how much and what you're eating.
2. For every action there is an equal or opposite reaction, and with Halloween candy the reaction is... BURPEES. Its safe to say we are all opposed to burpees.
This chart calculates the equivalent numbers of burpees a person must perform in order to burn off a FUN SIZE piece of candy. Yes, portion size is FUN SIZE.

Surviving Halloween & The Holidays
EEEK.... The scariest day of the year is ALMOST here!!! After a weekend of spooky sugary treats, ghoulishly good drinks and devilish comfort food, HALLOWEEN weekend causes many of us to think we’re in a fun house, when look in the mirror Monday morning. As you’re staring at yourself in the mirror, you begin to count how many ‘fun size’ candy bars you’ve enjoyed, and how many pumpkin martinis you drank. Yes, those ‘fun size’ candy bars might be portion control size, however, most of us eat more than just one, and the pumpkin martinis go down nice and easy, so the next thing you know you’re a BIG kid with a bloated belly and a chocolate pumpkin muffin top in your jeans.
When it comes to food, and everything else in life, mindset is HUGE. We’ve got 12 days until Halloween, which means… EEK…. the candy is already starting to enter the house!! I want you start changing the way you look at and think about food NOW! The temptation is there so I’m not gonna lie and tell you this is going to be easy… however, this doesn’t mean you don’t try or you take a whole week or more off from eating healthy and working out because you don’t have any willpower. TRUST ME… You’re stronger than you think you are! I’m doing 21 Day Fix to help keep me focused as this is the EASIEST time of year to get off track. Here are some tips to help you stay on track….
1. DON’T give out your favorite candy to trick-or-treaters. Seriously, why would you torture yourself like this?? My mom was infamous for doing this though… She would alway buy Milky Ways, and Junior Mints to give out, which are her favorite. Since we lived on a street with only 8 house, and 2 main roads at either end of our street, we didn’t get many trick-or-treaters. Needless to say, my brother and I would always open the candy before Halloween, and my mom would yell at us for opening it and then hide it. We would always find her hiding spots, but there was also alway less candy in the bag then when she hid it.
INSTEAD---- Get a candy you don’t like and doesn't tempt you! In the past I’ve given out snack size bags of pretzel, or cookies, and since I’m gluten free there is no temptation there. My Grammy would hand out raisins!! Trust me, your house isn’t going to get egged or TPed because you didn’t give out the king size candy bars. Kids are getting lots of goodies in their bags.
2. Out of sight out of mind. Again… why are you torturing yourself? Keep the candy bowl hidden! If the devilish dish of goodies is sitting on the kitchen counter or the table by door your mind is saying “Feed me, Seymour!” everytime you walk by or see it! I don’t keep candy in the house, and when I do have chocolate in the house, I keep it next to my Shakeology! Once Halloween is over get the candy out of the house!! Honestly… you don’t need it, and neither do your kids… have the kids keep a few of THEIR favorites and then donate the rest! Take it to a local children's hospital, give it to your spouse to take to work, or you take it to work. When I was teaching the Teacher’s Room was ALWAYS filled with treats after Halloween. There is no reason to feel the need to keep all this candy in house. The only thing it’s going to is undo all the great work you’ve done and make the kids more hyper than they already are! Sugar is as addictive as cocaine! The more you have of it, the more you crave it! You’ve been warned, once you start it's hard to stop!
3. Keep a journal. I’m a HUGE fan of food journals. It’s how I figured out gluten and I aren’t friends. As we enter into the holiday, it’s even more important to be tracking what you’re eating and drinking. Honestly, this time of year it's so easy to not realize what you’re consuming. A taste of this, a bite of that, a glass or 2 of wine, a fall cocktail, the infamous words “You need to try this!”, before you know it you’ve consumed way more than planned. However, when you pay attention to what you’re eating by writing it down, you’re being accountable, staying on track and won’t second guess yourself. As a foodie, I know when I don’t keep track of what I’m eating I have tendency to over do it.
4. Exercise. It's NON-NEGOTIABLE! No matter what, you need to stick to your fitness program. Halloween is on a Saturday, I am going to get up have my tea and do my morning meditation, have a healthy breakfast of poached eggs over avocado, pack an overnight bag, do my workout, have a healthy snack, drink my Shakeology for lunch, have another healthy snack and dinner! I'm going to a Halloween party and will have a few drinks with the friends. Maybe a piece of candy or a few treats, but I’m not going to gorge myself on the festive foods and wreck my day. I'm not starving myself to have extra calories for the evening! The plan works, stick to it! 80/20 means 1 meal not an entire day or week! The key to success... Everything in moderation and don't EVER skip a workout on a cheat day, EVER! KAPEESH!!!
5. Find healthy alternatives. We all have those favorite Halloween treats we love, and the ones which take us back to our childhood. There are PLENTY of healthy options out there to replace some of those treats.
My go to sweet treat replacement is Shakeology! Not only is it a delicious shake, I can also make treats with it! Like these No bake chocolate peanut butter balls, or Guiltless Chocolate, which is just like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.

Sandy Hook, Kids Yoga and Meditation 101... Oh My!
Happy Monday! Happy First Day of Autumn! Fall is my favorite time of year… The weather is cooler, the air is crisp and its means my birthday is right around the corner! With my birthday being right around the corner, I’ve spent A LOT of time reflecting on this past year and what changes I want to make for the new year. One of the things I realized was I’ve lost of sense of who I truly am… This is normal though… We all go through cycles within our lives. In realizing this though I vowed to myself I was going to go back to my roots! My marine science roots that is! My hair color is all natural, thank you very much!
In keeping this promise to myself I was able to make a dream of my come true and was offered a position with NJ Sea Grant. For those not familiar with NJ Sea Grant their mission is to promote the wise use of New Jersey’s marine and coastal resources through research, education, and outreach. But I digress… This isn’t anything I’m going to get financially rich off and I’m 100% fine with that… As I’m not doing this for the money, I’m doing it for love.
This past weekend was my first weekend with Sea Grant co-leading a Boy Scout Merit Badge and all I can say is… I was KID IN A CANDY STORE! It felt amazing to get back in the water and teach the kids how to seine and how to do the vegetation surveys. It was music to my ears when I heard “Michelle, what is this?” only to respond with… “What do you think it is?” or “What does it look like?” or actually telling them what it is… Only to hear “Oh WOW! COOL!”. It gave me great joy to watch these boys in the lab.. learning, exploring, and having fun with science. This to me is what learning is all about! This to me how kids TRULY learn and part of the reason why I could no longer be in a traditional classroom any longer. I left Sandy Hook on Saturday afternoon with the HUGEST smile on my face and felt a way I haven’t felt in YEARS! My soul had been restored! Little did I know the restoring of the soul weekend had JUST BEGUN!
From Boy Scouts, sand, fish and science too… girls, yoga, and being a kid again. Yup! Sunday morning I woke up and taught my first kids yoga class at Joyful Living Center. It felt great to be a kid again! We hopped around the room as lost little frogs trying to make our way back to pond and asking all the animals we saw along the way for help. We belly laughed , we sang, and the girls learned they are strong! They certainly were all smiles when they left and honestly didn’t want the class to end. I kinda didn’t want the fun to end either. Once again, I left with a huge smile on my face and feeling at peace. The restoring of my soul was continuing…
From kids yoga, it was kicking off my Meditation 101 workshop! Over the next 7 days I will be leading a workshop on how to meditate, the benefits of meditations, and leading daily guided meditations. This is the first time I’ve done anything like this and am nervous as anything… Thankfully, the workshop is off to a wonderful start… thanks to a little meditating the nerves have subsided and I’m really looking forward to sharing my knowledge on this topic with others. While this workshop is currently closed, I will be offering another free online meditation workshop in November to help with the stress of the holidays. You can register for Holiday Meditation Workshop at http://bit.ly/MichelleMeditation101
What I realized during this soul restoring weekend is… I have so many gifts, so much knowledge to share and absolutely LOVE being able to teach so many people so many different things. When I said I wanted to go back to my roots I thought it meant my marine science roots… Little did I know, I would be going back to my informal education roots and sharing all the knowledge I’ve been blessed with. Get ready… because I’m going to be doing a WHOLE LOT of knowledge which I'm going to be sharing. What to learn something, simply ask and I'll be happy to do a workshop or video training on it.
Keep Smiling,
Michelle
PS ~ I’ll be teaching a free clean eating for all you single ladies starting Oct. 5th Email me at motivationbymichelle@gmail.com for info.
